Reference #:8061 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
This piece appears to have been converted from a pottery jar to a plant pot. Excellent top border portrayal of elephants. There is a hole drilled in the bottom that was not originally intended to be there. This does not take away from the beauty of this piece whatsoever. As far as the condition, there is crazing and cracking apparent but not major. The pot can be used for decorative purposes or be using in conjunction with plants. Size is approx 5x7in.

Item: Patchwork Quilt
Reference #:8933a Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
The quality of this quilt is magnificent. The stitching is very well done and the creativity is fantastic. If you look at the side of the quilt that has the blue, one of the lighter patch squares looks as though that portion of the quilt is ripped and torn. But in fact its not, look closely you will see that the fabric is sewn that way with the cotton showing. Also, the blue side of the quilt is decorated with small white flowers. The other side of the quilt is a mixture of many colors such as: red, green, blue, white, yellow, light brown, etc. The entire quilt is in good condition except for the normal age and wear. Approx. 148” x 148”.

Item: A. Collier acrylic on canvas panel: female
Reference #:5998 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
Now, this painting is the pinnacle of whimsy! This one looks as if it rolled right off the pages of C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." A naive (using the term lovingly), primitive (also using the term lovingly) acrylic work, signed "A. Collier, 1953" in lower right, this painting belongs in your collection of folk art, or just good paintings. An excellent companion to its sister painting (ref. # 5999). Framed (wood). Overall size: approx. 16.5 X 13". Image size: 9 X 12".

Item: Plaster sculpture: dwarfish figure playing pipes
Reference #:5089 Channel: ART
Status: SOLD
This plaster sculpture depicts a nature god (?) or perhaps a dwarf, or a sprite, playing a set of pipes. Or maybe it's the late, great Jerry Garcia. We're not quite sure. However, a great sculpture for your home or garden. How could this little guy not bring a smile to your face? App. 15" tall X app. 10" wide.

Item: Mixed media collage
Reference #:6115 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A truly bizarre little mixed media piece depicting Christ (?) with the holy grail, or perhaps a bacchanal of some sort. Unfortunately, the exact provenance of this collage is unknown, but it was obviously created by the same artisan as the collage of S. Jacobus (ref #6114). The outer border is ornate, but definitely homemade--which is precisely what makes this, and its companion piece, so visually successful. Framed/under glass. Overall size: 9.5 X 7". Image size: 9 X 6.5".

Item: Unknown saint painted on tin
Reference #:6116 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is an interesting folk art piece that is at least one century old. It depicts a saint, or a holy man, holding his cherished rosary beads in his slender hand. The provenance for this iconic painting has, unfortunately, been lost. However, if you know anything about it, we'd love to hear from you. Perhaps the strangest thing about this very strange painting is what appears to be a Chinese character situated in the lower center of the composition. We personally love this piece, but it is in fair condition, with some flaking on the surface plane, due largely to its age and medium (painting on tin). A very passionate work of art. Framed (wood). Overall size: app. 16 X 14". Image size: 9 X 11".

Item: S. Jacobus mixed media collage
Reference #:6114 Channel: Art
Status: Sold
Another eccentric piece of religious folk art about which very little is known. This mixed media collage appears to have been a work that was extremely personal to the artist--that naive, primitive style that is nearly impossible to duplicate. There are many wonderful and ornate details hidden within the miniature confines of this work of art. Framed/under glass. Overall size: app. 9.5 X 7". Image size: 9 X 6.5".

Item: Oil on canvas portrait: artist unknown
Reference #:6121 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a beautiful work of art. A little boy in his suit and ruff, sitting still while his portrait is painted. The colors and brush techniques employed in this piece are magnificent and could possibly belong to the Newport (Indiana) school of painting. The subject could even be the child of one of the Robber Barons of that era. A painting such as this one doesn't come along every day. Treat yourself to a piece of history and elegance by purchasing this original canvas today. Slightly rough around the edges, but in excellent condition for its provenance. The surface plane is very coarse canvas which adds immensely to the charm of this portrait. No frame. Overall size: 16" X 20".

Item: Freda Reiter colored pencil sketch on paper
Reference #:6119 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
Own a fantastic original drawing from an artist of renowned talent! This colored pencil sketch depicts a couple of vacationers "hard at work" on the beach. This drawing may have been started life as a fast study, but we think you'll agree that there was absolutely no compromising on the skill employed, or the quality. A nice wall piece for your vacation home, or for those times in "the real world" when you wish you were there. Be good to yourself and remember what you're working for. Freda Leibovitz Reiter (1919 - 1986) graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the 1930's, then studied under Diego Rivera in Mexico City. She then sketched WWII soldiers for the USO before hiring on to the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper as a courtroom sketch artist in Philadelphia and New Jersey. She also taught art privately and in public schools, as well as various other honors and accolades in the New Jersey area. Finally, she began a long and illustrious career as a television courtroom sketch artist. Her art is on permanent display at the National Portrait Gallery (Smithsonian), and in private collections, including those of former and current members of Congress, lawyers of individuals whose trials she covered and many of her former colleagues at ABC. Wood frame/under glass. Sig. in lower right. Overall size: app. 22.5 X 18.5". Image size: 13.5 X 9.5".

A hand-colored engraving with Aquatint and etching by R. Havell. "No. 3" in upper right-hand corner--Plate XI. This absolutely stunning print is from the first edition of "The Birds of America" by J. Beautifully framed in a wood frame, under glass, this piece simply owns any room it resides in. A great acquisition for Audubon fans, bird lovers, patrons of fine works of art, or all of the above. 1970's reproduction of classic Audubon print. App. overall size: 37 X 50". Image size: 31 X 44".

A small stream flows gently past a small child under a large parasol. A pot of tea and three small cups await the thirsty workers whenever they take a break. The gilded wooden frame is made to look like bamboo which enhances the oriental feel of the piece. Overall 10.5 x 15.5, Image 9.5 x 14.5.

Item: George Muss: Fruit Bowl Oil on Canvas
Reference #:6109 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a very colorful portrayal of the traditional theme of the still-life "fruit in bowl". What makes this piece stand out from its brethren is the fact that the artist was only twelve-years-old at the time of its completion. If you're looking for the freshest, most delicious fruit in Grandview, Ohio, look no further than this painting. You can almost taste the delicious apples, pears, and plums. The wooden frame has some damage. Written on the reverse: "This picture was painted by George Muss. Aunt Claire raised him. He was about 12 yr. old." Approx. 14 ½ x 12, Image 11/5 x 8.5.

Approx. 15 x 13 1/2, image 10 x 8.5.

Item: Our Lady of Good Help Print
Reference #:6104 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
A somewhat iconic print of Mary and the baby Jesus encircled by a border of colorful flowers. 800 years ago Christians were being captured and sold into slavery by the thousands, and nobody knew what to do about it. St. John of Matha founded the Trinitarians to go to the slave markets, buy the Christian slaves and set them free. To carry out this plan, the Trinitarians needed large amounts of money. So, they placed their fund-raising efforts under the patronage of Mary. They were so successful at that, over the centuries, the Trinitarians were able to free thousands and thousands of people and to return them safely home. In gratitude for her miraculous assistance, St. John of Matha honored Mary with the title of "Our Lady of Good Remedy." Devotion to Mary under this ancient title is widely known in Europe and Latin America, and the Church celebrates her feast day on October 8. Our Lady of Good Remedy is often depicted as the Virgin Mary handing a bag of money to St. John of Matha. When in need - for whatever reason, but especially where you have had difficulty obtaining help - invoke the aid of Our Lady of Good Remedy, and you will surely experience the power of her intercession. The print is in fair condition with some age and wear. It is in a wooden frame (gilded) that does have some nicks and scratches. “N.D. DE BON SECOURS,” and “N. SEN. SEL SOCORRO,” along with the phrase “Our Lady of Good Help.” are printed on the bottom. Approx. 10 ½ x 13 ½, image 9.5 x 13.5.

This primitive, naive representation, like all primitive, naive works of art, has a definite understated charm. Item: Sanay (?) Savoy (?) Sandy (?) oil on canvas

This colorful oil on canvas depicts a Mosque-style structure situated behind a field of purple flowers. A lot of training and skill went into this piece--excellent brushwork, coupled with a good eye for color. The techniques employed are far more sophisticated than they appear; the artist let the daubs of paint, and the brushstrokes themselves, create the forms, leading to a wonderful cohesion of colors and shapes. Wood frame with a carved outer edge/linen mat. Sig. in lower right is illegible. Overall size: 13.5 x17". Image size: 10 x 13.5”.

A lovely mountainscape with standing water, this is a great watercolor by E.M. Shafer that was definitely ahead of its time. Item: Mike Altman watercolor on paper
Reference #:5974 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This lush watercolor appears to be a mere landscape, at first glance. However, look a little harder and you'll be able to see its true subject: the miniscule, solitary swimmer shivering in the cold mountain stream. This is a nice contemporary-style watercolor, containing great attention to detail. The forms may look simplistic, and sometimes simply suggested by the colors themselves, but, if one studies this piece, one realizes just how much knowledge and skill went into each and every brushstroke. Nothing was left to chance. Wood frame/green mat/under glass. Overall size: 16 x 12.5" Image size: 11.5 x 9". Sig. In lower left.

Signature in lower right. 13" x 11". 9.5" x 7.5".

Item: Gino Severini print
Reference #:5971 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
An extremely vibrant silkscreen--this is not a typical Xerox print. Definitely a period piece; the gold seal on the reverse reads: "Closson Cincinnati". A classic example of traditional Italian mid-century subject matter: gondolas parked on the banks of the Venice canals. The simple, flat shapes overlap to create the outlines of the buildings from negative space. Gino Severini (1883-1966) was one of the leading painters of the Italian futurist movement, which proposed a radical renovation of artistic activity in keeping with the dynamism of modern mechanized life. He went on to much acclaim in his home base of Paris. He was also a founder and indispensable part of the Italian Futurism movement of the early 1900s. Part of a series of four Severini prints, all printed in the same manner by Closson (see reference #'s: 5969 - 5972), this would make a great companion piece for any, or all, of the other three. Professionally matted (slight fading on mat)/wood frame/under glass. Overall size: 11.5 x 10". Image size: 5.5 x 4.5".

An extremely vibrant silkscreen--this is not a typical Xerox print. Definitely a period piece; the gold seal on the reverse reads: "Closson Cincinnati". The tranquility of this traditional Italian still-life is offset by the activity of the two birds in the foreground. Magnificent use of color and simple shapes. The colors on this absolutely beautiful silkscreen print of Severini's "Still-Life With Mandolin" almost leap from the paper--very painterly ink consistency. This is not a typical Xerox print. Definitely a period piece; the gold seal on the reverse reads: "Closson Cincinnati". A textbook example of the eclectic later styles Severini explored, this particular piece is an experimental rendition of a classic Cubist theme--flattened objects, traditional Cubist subject matter (mandolin, fruit, a mask), but with the artist's own trademark flair. An extremely surreal work of art (which, as you know, is not for everyone). You could look at this painting all day long and never be able to take it all in. It's like fifty paintings on one canvas. Take a close look and see if you recognize anybody. A wonderful cornucopia of subjects and images, this oil on canvas is not only a great work of art, but a great conversation piece. The artist is attributed to having been active in the central Ohio area in the 1960's and 70's. An extremely interesting and very original piece of someone's mind. No frame. Overall size: 48" x 80".

Status: Sold
Susan Sturgill Columbus, Ohio, • Illustrator • Printmaker, This signed, limited edition print is titled "Dragon Castle" (to distinguish it from the other three in the castle series). It is from the late 70's. We do not have or know the titles of the other three companion prints. To quote the artist herself' "Looks like it's still in the original mat, too. I can't believe it's held up so well." Susan Sturgill has been drawing all her life. Her professional training began at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence where she majored in graphic design and illustration. She has also taken classes at the Cleveland Institute and our very own Columbus College of Art and Design (where she studied both etching and computer graphics). Ms Sturgill started as a freelance illustrator in 1975. Since then her work has appeared in obscure publications, on college textbook covers, calendars and book-related products. She also has to her credit, some 20 jigsaw puzzle designs and a decorated life-size fiberglass horse for Lexington KY. Her etchings and drawings are shown at art festivals around the Midwest. You may have noticed a brown Astro with funky decoration around town. That’s her "Art Car." She published two books with small presses (The Frog Prince in 1976 and Animal Fair in 1983 - (both now out of print)) which she says gave her the big idea that she could do it herself. She became "The Laughing Academy Press" in 1988 and has three titles currently in print.

Item: Two Girls in a Field: acrylic or gouche

This is a cute piece that makes excellent use of color and composition. The dazzlingly-bright blonde hair of the twin girls draws the viewer's eye into the center of the plane, while the subsequent yellow and red tones draw it toward the sky, to the birds overhead. The horizon line and starkness of the tree trunks serve to anchor the overall cohesion. Needs re-matted and glass; the frame is adequate. This is an original work--not a print--but the signature in the lower right is illegible (see picture). Overall size: 27 x 33". Image size: 25 x 19".

Item: Lori Blum: Floral print
Reference #:5968 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
This is a very large, very attractive print of a traditional theme. The original work appears to have been rendered in an almost "paint-daub" style; this is especially evident in the execution of the flower petals and the leaves. The foliage at the base of the flowers shows evidence of advanced printing techniques, with a contemporary "crackle" effect. Muted colors--very pleasant decor. This print was professionally-matted and framed in a wood frame (gilded) under glass. Overall size: 41.5 x 32". Image size: 29 x 19".

This beautiful weaving demonstrates a more-than-competent application of artistry combined with technical know-how. The lady featured in this piece is perhaps praying, preparing for bed, or both. The gilded, wood frame compliments the weaving nicely as well. The superb planning inherent in the overall composition would make this piece an excellent addition to any home. Artist unknown. Wood frame/under glass. Overall size: 20.5 x 17". Image size: 16 x 13".

Item: D. Morgan Portrait, 1871
Reference #:5966 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
What a magnificent opportunity for the advanced restorer! Try your hand--it definitely needs some work, but the rewards and potential are immense. It was purchased at an estate sale at Garth's in Delaware, Ohio--so, if anyone knows a D. Morgan, it may have even more added value. The size of this painting is a plus--it dominates any room it resides in. The overall tone is dark, and somewhat muted, however, this works very successfully in collaboration with the general demeanor of the subject. Microscopic attention to detail, and a lot of care, went into features such as the latticework collar of the dress and the accompanying brooch. The brushwork used on this piece is soft and delicate--nearly invisible. On the back is written: "D. Morgan 1871". What is unknown is whether D. Morgan was the artist or the subject. What is known is that this painting serves as a wonderful time capsule for a glorious past. There is some tearing here and there on the canvas, but the overall surface plane appears to have survived its journey intact. Recently re-stretched canvas is in its original oak frame (the frame is gorgeous and we cannot think of another one this painting would look remotely as good in). A wonderful acquisition for any collector. Overall size: 37 x 33". Image size: 28 x 24".

Unfortunately, there is some edge wear, and a small tear in the lower left-hand side--but these could be easily repaired. No frame. Artist unknown. Overall size: 26 X 35.5".

Item: Carol M. Hershey collage/print
Reference #:5956 Channel: ART
Status: Sold
An arresting collage print--this piece seems to be all about motion. The figure in the center of the composition has been bisected, which serves to further lend itself to this theme of speed and rapidity. The parallel lines that connect the subject draw the eye across the print, forcing the aforementioned sense of movement upon the viewer, while the wise choice of color scheme does the rest. An original work, with signature and title in pencil, this piece is ideal for any collector with a good eye for design. On the reverse is a tear sheet containing information about the artist, as well as the technical processes she has employed. Hershey is a graduate of Cornell University -- ('61, B.A.), and also holds a degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design. She has participated in a wide variety of exhibitions during her lengthy career. Metal frame/under glass (fracture line in lower right corner of pane). Signature and date in lower right--title along bottom. Overall size: 33 x 26". Image size: 23 x 17".

Item: Leonardo Pizzanelli print of young girl
Reference #:5958 Channel: ART
Status: Sold

This muted study depicts a young girl posing dutifully for the artist's pencil. The girl is dressed in mid twentieth-century European dress and appears to be absorbed by melancholy (or perhaps it's just boredom from having to sit still for so long). The composition makes excellent use of the white space surrounding the subject--incorporating it somehow into the overall design until it becomes nearly as integral to the success of the entire work as is the portrait itself. A nice purchase for anyone who appreciates a fine line drawing--this print definitely falls into that category. Information available on the artist suggests that he was a prominent Florentine portraitist, who was active during the middle of the twentieth century (ab. 1945). He is known to have painted some military portraits during World War II, and many of his pieces have been displayed in various galleries throughout Europe. The print is in excellent, nearly pristine condition, in an attractive wood frame/under glass. Signature appears below the subject. Print # is 34/60 (lower left). Overall size: 25.5 x 23.5". Image size: 19.5 x 21".
