These 2 very
colorful works are
painted on opposite
sides of a piece of
artist paper with
matting (no frame).
The first side is a
real slice of
American rural
life. A tire swing
hangs from a large
tree just waiting
for a young child
to ask for a push
or for a young man
to spiral a
football through. A
small wooden bench
sits in the shade
under the full
canopy of leaves. A
large rust colored
barn with a plow is
featured in the
background. The
other side features
a barn in winter.
The snow is slowing
melting revealing a
lush green
landscape with a
deep pine forest
fading into the
vibrant colors of
the setting sun.
The bright red barn
stands in sharp
contrast to the
muted tones of the
rest of the scene.
Artist signed on
the lower left
corner. The artist
shows good
technique in both
pieces. Richard A.

journey. A couple

description of the
print which many
believe to be
Currier & Ives
“most outstanding
frontier scene”. In
1932 a group of
twelve prominent
collectors gathered
in New York City to
judge what they
considered would
represent the best
large folios
produced by
Currier. The late
Harry Shaw Newman
headed the endeavor
and was backed by
Harry T. Peters who
furnished part of
his extensive
collection for the
viewing. One of the
participants in
this project was
Charles Messer
Stow, antiques
editor of the New
York Sun. Charles,
sensing a story,
decided to cover
this selection of
Best 50 Large Folio
Currier & Ives
prints. The New
York Sun published
the selection
process and one
selected large
folio print per day
for 50 consecutive
days. This
attention sparked a
renewed interest in
Currier & Ives
prints. This first
undertaking was so
successful that it
was repeated the
following year with
the small folio
prints. The same
group of
collectors, for the
most part, were
asked to choose the
best 50 small folio
prints. In this
final selection
there are four
medium folio
prints.. The prints
from these two
first selections of
prints we now refer

almost none in the

An
original watercolor
on paper
representation of a
crow, rook, or
blackbird (please
let us know if you
recognize this
critter), this is a
fine avian painting
that could give J.
Audubon a run for

enough to blend
into any
environment, yet
bold enough to be
noticed, this
watercolor would
make a fine
addition to a

wildlife pieces, or
just good art.

This is a nice
snapshot-style oil
portrait on canvas
in which the artist
really seems to
have captured the
essence of the
subject. The
sitter, at first
glance, appears
somewhat
authoritarian.
However, upon
closer inspection,
you can glimpse a
certain wry twinkle
in his eye and a
bemused smile.
Nice, visible
brushstrokes, and a
background which
doesn't overtake
the subject, but
has a life of its
own as well. A fine
example of classic
portraiture,
coupled with a
contemporary
paradigm. Wood

This is a
wonderful painting
that commands a
certain quiet awe.
The primitive,
naive style
employed, while not
lacking a certain
degree of
sophistication,
still maintains an
overall childlike
charm and
simplicity that
makes this one
stand out in its
field. Like a
Newbury-award
winning
children's-book
illustration
masquerading as a
work of fine art,
this painting
definitely deserves
a good home. Some
crackling on the
surface plane,
which is not
uncommon among
paintings of its
age, but is in
overall good
condition for its
provenance. Wood
frame (chips on
corners). Overall
size: 25" X 31".

This painting
is all about
"flower power." A
well-rendered
contemporary take
on a classic theme.
The colors are
extremely vibrant
(as they should be
in a floral
painting) and the
brushstrokes are
purposely visible.
The thick,
impasto-style
application of the
paint serves to
bring the cohesive
whole together,
while all three
elements together
cause the subject
matter to
practically leap
from the surface
plane. This piece
is sure to brighten
up your home or

a nice companion
piece for the
artist's other

This one's so
bright, you'll have
to wear shades! The
floral print has
been a
tried-and-true
staple of fine art
throughout history,
but rarely have we
seen one that
captures the
otherworldly,
ethereal quality of
the flowers
themselves. The
colors used in the
depiction in these
plants ARE the
subject matter and
the brush technique
and composition
more than
competently support
that fact. We
personally
guarantee this
painting will
brighten up any
room it resides in.

excellent companion

What a
precious work of
art! This pastoral
scene, signed
(lower R) by BW
Abram, depicts a
farmer astride his
cart, returning
home from a hard
day in the fields,
or at market (or

nice primitive
piece of naive folk

appreciates good

This is a

This is an
extremely colorful
print which, at

at second, third,

be a watercolor. It
depicts a
lighthouse atop a
series of
otherworldly,
rolling waves. Very
nice color
selection and
composition define
this print. One of
those pieces that
really brightens up
a room, plus, being
a limited print
(3/75), it's a good
investment as well.
Wood frame/under
glass. Steven Guy
Bilodeau was born
in Lewiston, Maine
in 1957 and raised
in Livermore Falls,
Maine. He moved to
California in 1984
and received basic
Art training at the
San Francisco
School of Art. He
also has trained
extensively with
the nationally
known plein-air
painter Armand
Cabrera. His other
major influences
are Maynard Dixon
and Edward Hopper.
Steven now resides
in Kelseyville
California
overlooking
beautiful
Clearlake.
"Aesthetically, I
believe that art
should impact the
viewer and stir an
inner feeling or
memory. If I have
evoked that emotion
then my painting is
successful". "When
I first became
interested in
plein-air painters,
I admired artists
from the "Society
of Six" as in
Selden Gile,
William Clapp,
Louis Siegrist to
mention a few. They
were early
California
Impressionists and
I became attracted
to their outlook
and lifestyle. They
were painters that
went out together
and painted alla
prima and seemed
interested in truly
capturing the
emotional elements
of a scene. I think
I modeled myself
after these people.
Many plein-air
artists these days
will bring a piece
back to the studio
to finish up, but I
feel the emotional
bond has been lost
once you leave the
scene so I paint
from start to
finish in one
sitting in the true
pure plein-air
tradition. I will
often paint in the
studio by photo but
even then I will
paint from start to
finish in the
plein-air
tradition. For me,
I feel that if I do
not have an
emotional reaction
to a scene then how
can I expect a
viewer to have an
emotional reaction
to what I have
painted." Overall

1730 publication,
Twelve Months of
Flowers. This print
is the month of
February and
features the
flowers Duke Vantol
Tulip, Cornelian
Cherry, White
Crocus and Persian
Iris. Robert Furber
was a British
nurseryman with
gardens near Hyde
Park Gate in
Kensington, London

collection of 12
engravings after
paintings by the
Flemish artist
Pieter Casteels to
display the variety
of plants that he
stocked. The series
was issued as a
luxurious catalogue
for his stock: over
400 flowers are
illustrated, and
each is identified
in the key below
the picture so that
customers could
easily order their
requirements. These
plates thus form an

A Sargent Winter
Landscape
Watercolor. The
setting of the
early winter sun
showers the sky
with brilliant
colors of blue,
red, orange and
yellow. A well used
and rutted country
road winds by a
small enclave of
houses flanked by a
split rail fence on
one side and a low
stone wall on the
other. A few autumn
leaves still cling
to the near barren
trees in the
foreground. A
winter storm has
painted a swath of
white down the
center of the piece
as whips of smoke
rise from a distant
chimney. The deep
green of the pine
forest brings to
mind fond memories
of winter. The
artist displays
good technique and
detail. The work is
unframed and is on
heavy paper. Artist
signature in lower
left hand corner.

This piece is dated
1980. “Over the

the woods…” would
certainly be
appropriate for
this winter
landscape. A snow
covered house and
barn are nestled
amongst a grove of
pine trees as they
overlook a distant
lake. The frozen

colorful rays of

Emma Hayhurst
“By The Waterfall”
oil on board with
artist sticker and
signature on the
reverse. She worked
in the Emma
Hayhurst Art Studio
in Massillon Ohio.
She continues the
Ohio naïve
primitive style of
painting with her
luminous oils.
Passionate yet
reserved palette
gives one a sense
of absolute peace,
solitude and love.
The moonlight is
shinning brightly
on another peaceful
evening by the
waterfall. Perhaps
Thomas Kincaid
would appreciate
this work of light.

Dean Close oil
on canvas landscape
from 1975. This
painting portrays a
landscape of a
river flowing
gently by a densely
forested mountain
range. His skillful
use of color and
technique can be
seen in the touch
of fall in the
leaves, the purple
shadows of the
mountains and the
wispy clouds in the
sky above. This
painting is small
and quaint and
would be perfect
for your reading
room or library. On
the back is a tag
which reads the
following “Dean
Close paints
America with
particular emphasis
on the hill country
of his native Ohio.
His numerous trips
to the Great Lakes
Regions, east and
west coasts and
lengthy stays in
the western
mountain and desert
areas add
significantly to
his realm of the
subject matter. His
paintings are in
galleries and
private collections
throughout the
United States. He
is represented in
the American
Embassies in both
Germany and Japan.
His work is
representational in
the dignified sense
and reflects the
influence of the
finest Twentieth
Century American
Art.” Dimensions

F
Van Holte oil on
canvas portrait of
human eye. This
painting is very
interesting in that
the portrait is
only the eye area
of the person that
is expertly blended
into the cream
background color.
The painting is
well done and
tastefully
abstract, a great
cerebral
conversation piece.
Salvador Dali would
approve. Dimensions
